The opposition Labor party in the United Kingdom is seriously considering making a proposal that is going to introduce a new levy on all sports wagering activities in the UK. The money collected from this levy is planned to be used to help deal with problem gambling as well as being ploughed to other grassroots sports. This new proposal was issued by Harriet Harman and Clive Efford.
According to the present regulations, gambling on horseracing is the only sport that is subjected to such levy. The levy collected amounted up to 82 million GBP last year.
Clive Effort also stated that they are consulting and debating whether to introduce such levy to all gambling activities, including online gambling in order to fund and support gambling awareness as well as problem gambling and also to improve the different community club and sports facilities.
